4.2.1. Cheruiyot Kirui - Elgeyo-Marakwet

About the Contributor

I am a recreational runner with a bias towards trail runs and mountains. This is a magnetic course, keeps pulling at me, I've run it approximately 10 times. It is scenic and a little tough.

I call the route Fluorspar Tarmac-to-Tarmac. The reason for the name is that the course is on an all-weather road starting off the Iten-Kabarnet Road at Emcea and ending at Nyaru Shopping Centre off the Eldoret-Eldama Ravine Road.

About the Route

It is a one way route with the first 20KM undulating through the scenic Kerio Valley countryside. The latter 23KM is all uphill with many switchbacks and great views of the Kerio Valley.

It starts at lowly altitude of about 1150m and ends at the high altitude of 2745m. Much higher than Iten. The 23KM relentless climb is both a heartbreaker (especially if one has ambitious targets) and addictive. Elite runners like the latter half marathon distance of the climb. Total distance is just short of 43KM effectively making it more or less a full marathon.
