If you've been a runner in the UK or South Africa in the last decade, then there's a good chance that you've come across parkrun. Active in 22 countries, parkrun is a volunteer based movement that supports free, timed, 5km runs in public parks. It's been phenomenally successful at creating an accessible and welcoming entry point into running, with amazing running communities growing up around each events. It has over 3,000,000 registered runners the two countries mentioned alone and has been thousands of runners first excursion into running.
Unfortunately we couldn't convince parkrun to come to Kenya...but that doesn't stop us applying the model. In the next few months we're looking to start events in Karura Forest and The Nairobi Arboretum.
Whilst the standard entry fees will apply, we are aiming to use the free-to-enter parkrun model for the events themselves. This will require the help of volunteers so if you're interested in supporting this initiative, please drop us an email at [email protected].
